Abstract

After a disturbance, the process of natural regeneration begins with the germination of seeds from the bank in the soil or litter. Since tropical pine forests are susceptible to fire, the seed bank can burn, affecting ecosystem recovery. The objective of this study was to evaluate the seed bank of the tropical pine forest of El Fresno located in the ejido of Santa María Ahuacatitlán, Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico two years after a fire occurred. The seed richness and density of the bank was evaluated in the litter and the soil of forest that experienced low, medium, or high fire severity and was compared with that of the unburned forest using the sieving method and the seedling emergence method. In total, 597 seeds of 22 morphospecies were recorded and 1,596 seedlings of 48 morphospecies, emerged. The 42
taxa determined belonged to 29 genera in 20 families: the Asteraceae (30%) and Rubiaceae (23%) families represented more than half of all recorded seeds or seedlings. Most species were herbaceous (N=39) and only three woody species were recorded. Seed richness was higher in the litter of the forest that experienced a fire of low severity compared to the forest that experienced a high severity fire. Seed richness was higher in the litter of the forest that experienced low severity compared to the forest bank that experienced a high-severity fire. The results suggest that fires of low or medium severity release space and increase light favoring the development of a seedling bank of woody species and a diverse community of herbs that contributes to enriching the seed bank.
